Police Investigate a Fatal Shooting on the 1800 block of Brownlee Street

On Saturday, April 8, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers responded to the 1800 block of Brownlee Street in response to a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered two adult males who had sustained gunshot wounds.

Officers discovered that the victims were sitting in the vehicle next to the residence on Brownlee Street when unknown individuals in another vehicle pulled up next to them and fired multiple shots, hitting both victims and their vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Both males were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and one succumbed to his injuries, making this an active homicide investigation.

The victim's name will be released pending notification of the next of kin. No other details will be released at this time to protect the integrity of the investigation.

During the investigation into the shooting on Brownlee Street, Joseph Walker, 37, was identified as the suspect. Montraze Slater, 43, was identified as the deceased victim.  After the incident, Prichard Police responded to Reynolds Avenue, where they found Walker in a vehicle with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. Further questions regarding Mr. Walker's death should be referred to the Prichard jurisdiction. The second victim is still hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.
