On Sunday, January 4, 2026, shortly before 10:00 a.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of Tuscaloosa Street. Upon arrival, two subjects inside of the home began shooting at officers. One officer was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries Sunday.
As of Monday, the officer seriously injured continues to show signs of improvement after he was struck near the abdomen, but he remains in stable condition at a local hospital. Now that loved ones are aware and continue to lift him up in prayer, we are now comfortable releasing his identity.
Lt. Lorenzo Matthews, a 26-year-veteran of the Mobile Police Department who is currently assigned to 3rd Precinct, is the officer who was struck by gunfire while arriving on scene.
“Lt. Matthews is a well-trained officer, and while responding to a call for service, came under fire. This is a tough reminder of the risks my officers face each and every day while protecting the community. Lt. Matthews has a long road ahead, but he’s expected to recover. However, that in no way takes away from the severity of his injuries and the healing needed to move forward. I continue to ask you to pray for Lt. Matthews, his family and the entire Mobile Police Department during this challenging time,” said Chief William Jackson.
