Hotel closes due to crime and code violations

Jun 24th, 2022

A hotel is temporarily closed due to complaints of crime and code violations. From January 2021 to April 2022, the Mobile Police Department received over 1,000 calls for service at the Americas Best Value Inn & Suites, located at 162 West I-65 Service Road North. Occupants of the hotel complained about drug activity and reported gun crimes, assaults, domestic violence as well as other public nuisance issues such as public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

Over the past year and a half, undercover officers purchased illegal drugs on dozens of occasions and executed multiple search warrants at the hotel. On June 23, 2022, the Narcotics/Vice Unit, along with SWAT and K-9, executed three search warrants in rooms where illegal narcotics had been purchased.

Two individuals were arrested. Emmett Davis, 42, was charged with three counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance, three counts of possession of controlled substance, three counts of possession of controlled substance, possession of marijuana second degree, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges for 25-year-old Nigel Winston included possession of marijuana second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia. Winston also had outstanding warrants.

Immediately after the search warrants were executed, investigators with the Municipal Enforcement Task Force responded to the property and conducted inspections. This task force consisted of individuals from the structural, plumbing, electrical, swimming pool, A/C maintenance, and insect/pest infestation departments. Inspectors from the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department also responded.

As a result of these inspections, code enforcement officers found major violations of city code(s) that include unsafe structure, unfit for human habitation, and major fire code for no working fire systems. The facility was also placed on a fire watch until repairs and improvements can be made. As the property owner of the Americas Best Value Inn & Suites works to come into compliance, the hotel will remain closed.
