On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the individual who was transported to the hospital with injuries was released and brought to MPD HQ for questioning. Through the course of the investigation, officers discovered Joseph Smith IV, 28, fired shots at the deceased victim before an exchange of gunfire struck Smith, causing non-life-threatening injuries. Smith was arrested and transported to Metro Jail.
On Friday, May 8, 2026, at approximately 3:05 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 700 block of Highland Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim deceased and another male individual with a non-life-threatening gunshot injury. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Upon further investigation, officers discovered the subject being treated shot the deceased victim during an altercation outside of the home. A parked vehicle was also struck.
The deceased victim has been identified as Jonathan Sanders, 23.
At this time, no additional information will be released as this remains an active investigation.
